When doing an NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing, you’ll typically be at college for one day and one evening per week. The rest of the time, you’ll need to be working as an apprentice plumber as this will be a requirement of the course. You’ll be visited on-site by your NVQ assessor who will document your work and progress. You will also need to document your work across various areas within plumbing with dates, places, write-ups and photographs etc and they’ll need signing off too.
All of the above means that for the duration of the NVQ Level 2 (up to two years) you’ll be working for a plumbing company, alongside a qualified plumber or plumbers, almost full-time. The experience that you will gain from this will be invaluable – even more so than the theory behind it that you’ll learn in college.
So, is an NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing enough to work as a plumber? Yes – to an extent.
You are technically a plumber once you have the City & Guilds qualification NVQ Level 2 and two years’ experience in the industry. NVQ Level 2 covers water, sanitation and drainage etc. You will be able to apply for a full-time job or work self-employed as a qualified plumber.
Obviously, the next step would be NVQ Level 3 would be beneficial (and advisable) as you’ll study the theory behind complex systems, heating and controls and systems planning. You’ll also gain the underpinning knowledge that will see you through your ACS Gas Safety Training and eventually accreditation by the Gas Safe Register – required to work on gas installations, combination boilers etc.
The best place to look for more information on the qualifications mentioned is the City & Guilds website at this link:
