This applies to any trade you are wanting. Try web site called checkatrade, typed into any search engine will bring it up. Then type in your post code, so you get the ones local to you. All the people on here have been vetted, checked out for certificates, right qualifications and insurance etc and open to further monitoring. On the web site you can read other customer comments etc and the ratings of the companies. Checkatrade collect all their customer reports themselves and the companies do not see them.
So this is about as near as you’ll get to avoiding the cowboys.
Still get a couple round for quotes though.
Have used the site often and always been happy with the people selected.
We recently had an emergency big style. I went to see a neighbour who is a Carpenter knowing he would probably know a Plumber, he did and the guy was a complete Gem!!
I wouldn’t call a plumber without prior knowledge…
First off I’d try the plumber I normally use, failing that contact friends or neighbours nearby to find who they use
if I had to get a new plumber, then I’d start by looking at the CORGI website.
Un less it was a dire emergency I would avoid any plumber or company which guarantees n hours callout, or emergency repairs… these seem to be have the most con merchants.
If you do get a CORGI plumber, remember to inspect his CORGI card before he sets foot in the house. Ideally check the CORGI number against the CORGI registration. I know CORGI accreditation is applicable only for gas work but its an indication of their committment to their trade
Actually i would try and and see if i could fix it on my own, but if i couldn’t then i would call plumber. I wouldn’t feel secure if would let my friend fix something that involves plumbing
We’re pretty lucky in that we know people…. I have a few friends that are plumbers and one is a master plumber.. When we have an emergency we’ll give them a ring.. Provide dinner and a few beers and our troubles are fixed… I also work at a home improvement store so I can get expert advice from co-workers as well….
Hi,
If its really bad and needs emergency attention I would ring someone that is accredited in the local phone book.
However if its a small leak and you can catch the water in a bucket or something then I would either look up on the net on directions "how-to fix a leaking." and ring the first practical person that came to mind.
I would never dial a plumber right away – especially for a leak. And I would always hesitate – even when I was actually dialing.
Knowing a friend of a friend is usually better. (Depending on the friend of course…)
So many solutions are easily fixable if you do a little research though. It can save you a lot of money to surf around and look for possible problems and solutions.
And if your leak is in the ceiling..a plumber isn’t going to fix your roof…
That way you don’t spend forever trying to find a plumber that’s available and wants to do the job. The plumbers that want the job call you. Its quick and its easy.

It would depend on how bad the leak was, I would probably ask family if possible or a friend, neighbour if they could recommend one to me.
depends what the plumbing problem is

Good luck
i would use a recommended plumber
I would turn the water off first, then put a bucket under the leak before calling anyone.
I would fix it myself.

I wouldn’t use the phone book, thats too much hard work!
I’d use a free find a contractor site like:
1. http://www.servicecentral.com.au
2. http://www.servicemagic.com
3. http://www.renovationexperts.com
That way you don’t spend forever trying to find a plumber that’s available and wants to do the job. The plumbers that want the job call you. Its quick and its easy.
Cheers
